CHAPTER EIGHT

Misinformation Campaign

“Can you look into whether Congress could create legislation to specifically charge and target the President? Those fucking Democrats.” Sitting in front of me, Rudy Giuliani complained about Democratic efforts to remove the President from office. About one month prior to the release of the Mueller Report by Attorney General William Barr, I visited my father at the Trump Hotel. With my father at a table at the BLT Prime restaurant were Rudy Giuliani and his security personnel. There, the three of them were all excited, but also nervous at the fact that the report was finally being released years after the initiation of the Mueller probe. No one, not even Rudy, knew what to expect. At the time, I only knew Rudy on a surface level. I was still scared to approach him without my father being present because of his status as the President’s attorney and former Mayor of New York. Looking back, I saw the Mayor as a potential mentor in my personal life and professional career.

After my interaction with the Mayor during the Hannukah party, I spent limited time with him and my father in the weeks following. The reason for this was because the two of them were often travelling abroad. When news broke that Bob Mueller was close to completing his investigation, these travel plans became more limited. Because of this, I was able to spend more time with the Mayor and my father at the Trump Hotel, as the two of them were with one another on an almost daily basis. I vividly remember a time when I was with the two of them while the Mayor was visibly upset. He complained to me that in his opinion, the entire Mueller investigation was a political hit job against the President. According to the Mayor, the purpose of the investigation was designed to ultimately remove the President from office. He quipped that the Muller investigation team was made up of a number of Democrats who had personal grievances with the President and his policies. Because of this, Rudy did not believe the entire investigation was fair to his client, the President.

During this same conversation, the Mayor mentioned that in the news, there was talk that some in Congress sought to pass legislation in an attempt to extend the statute of limitations for certain criminal statutes that may apply to conduct the President participated in prior to taking office. These included various tax and fraud related offenses. At no point was the Mayor in agreement that the President actually acted in a criminal manner, and actually believed that these attempts were completely off base. According to the press reports, the Congressperson suggesting such legislation was Democratic Representative Eric Swalwell from California. Congressman Swalwell sat on both the House Select Committee on Intelligence,
